Comparative Politics and Comparative Method

This article is very confusing. He starts off by outlining the scientific methods and sayin that many political scientists are trying to not use comparative studies anymore. The subtypes of comparatives method have the potential to decrease the effects of the methodological application in society.

The Allegory of the Cave

This is from Book VII of The Republic written by Plato and it is focusing on Socrates' allegory of the cave. They start off by telling a story about people living in caves and how their shadows are the only thing they believe in. One of the prisoners in the cave sees another person and it traumatized him and makes him change everything he has ever believed in. This one prisoner finally was able to break out of the cave and discovers what was in front of him when he walked out, the rest of the entire world. This is metaphorically told to us because us students need to come of out the "cave" regarding our education.

What do we really mean by art

Like I said before, art is a very debatable subject. Art is described as a concept that continuously changes. Maraviglia interviews many artists to determine all of their concepts with the arts. Each artist contributes something completely to the art would and it is very interesting because I did not think that there were so many factors contributing to art. There are many perspectives given off by art and they are continuing to evolve into something great.

Value of the Arts

There is a huge debate going on about the value of arts. Some people believe that art is pointless for society but others see it as self serving. Art makes people very educated, and educated people offer great contributions to the society. Art helps make people more social, so communication in society would be better. If everyone could socialize without drama then the community could combine and be great together and gain a lot of power. If we did not have arts, then this society would be very modern.

Of power, worth, dignity, honor, and worthiness

This article is from Chapter 10 of the book, Leviathan, written by Thomas Hobbes. This part of the book talks about the State of Nature. This is a very argumentative subject but Hobbes says that all men are created equal in everything, not just strength and intelligence. Every human being is different in their own way and they should not be forced to act a certain way. Hobbes doesn't argue with the State of Nature and believes that every man should be for himself.

Polictical Naturalism

This article, written by Miller, explains to us many of Aristotle's theories. The biggest one that is talked about is the one regarding city and state politics. Aristotle thought that society need help to survive, he thought that we could not do it on our own. He also believed that we had to reproduce, we cannot live alone. It is not healthy to live alone so we have to get married and reproduce. This is called State of Nature and it is very difficult to understand because many people have different interpretations on it.

A matter of honor

This article talks about braking the honor code academically in colleges. Most students and parents believe in the honor code because it is such a bid deal and we should all have been raised to obey the rules that are given to us. In my opinion, the honor code is a great thing because if students are going to try and cheat and lie their way through school, then they deserve to be punished for it. Every student should have enough respect to abide by the honor code but if not, they should be in trouble. I agree with every school having a strict honor code.

Of natural condition of mankind

This article is from Chapter XIII of the book Leviathan written by Thomas Hobbes. This is a very confusing article because it is talking about how individuals have power over one another. Many powers that individuals have, they abuse them greatly. Like one that is discussed in this article is popularity, many people abuse this power so they are bringing society down. If we could all stop abusing powers that are given to us or we have earned, then society would not be crumbling down.

Why kids need to learn philosophy

It has been said that this is the worst generation and the upcoming generations are going to be bad as well. We have no knowledge of philosophy and hardly any discipline. Nowadays, us kids can just sit around on our phone all day long and have no communication with the outer world. Most of these younger generations have no morals, they think that they are doing everything right and do not need to be corrected but they are completely wrong. Our minds are not open to anything, they are closed. This is our biggest problem, once philosophy is taught though and we take in account the problems in the world then the generations may start slowly getting better.

Why teach Plato to plumbers

This article starts with a subheading of "Liberal arts and the humanities aren't just for the elite." Scott Samuelson explains to us how liberal arts affects people in the job field. He is saying that liberal arts is not just for college student by metaphorically saying that even plumbers need a liberal arts education. Liberal arts is one of those subjects that literally has everything to do with every single job field in the world. Everyone, including people who do not work, needs to have some education in liberal arts because it is basic knowledge.

Study Liberal Arts and gain power

Liberal arts is such a diverse education track. Many people believe that now if you do well in classes that pertain to your major then you will more than likely get hired to wherever you apply. that is definitely not the case though, you need to be able to have education in all types of fields. For example, if you are in nursing and you only took classes on how to be a nurse then you are not going to have the liberal arts portion of the field. Every major field has multiple liberal art classes that go along with it. By having a liberal arts education then you are more than likely to get a good, well playing job.

Business and the Liberal Arts

This article, Business and the Liberal Arts, written by Bronfman explains to us that "the best preparation for life and career... is a liberal arts degree." He says that liberal arts gives you a sense of good judgement that can be used in all job fields. We have always been told to think outside of the box and by reading this article, I get a little hint that a liberal arts education will help us to start thinking outside of the box. It helps to think outside of the box because general education classes pertain to all types of fields, it is not narrowed down to just one. A liberal arts education will help you have a good understanding of everything in life.

What Every Student Should Know

Charles McGrath wrote an article called What Every Student Should Know in "The Washington Post" to describe to us his views how college students view the general education classes they have to take. General education classes have to be completed before you can take any classes concerning your major. Many general education classes were taken in high school so many believe that they should have to spend money and retake them in college. They believe that right when you enter college, you should be able to automatically start taking classes concerning your major. In my opinion, general education classes are very important to major classes. The general education classes are very dominant and that is why they are required because you use them more than you think in your major classes and in the job field.

Valerie Strauss

Valerie Strauss describes, in her article on The Washington Post, what the word "liberal" means in the term "liberal arts." She says there is much confusion to what liberal arts are and what liberal arts actually means. Everyone has a different comprehension of words so that is why there is so much confusion. Strauss says that the definition of "liberal" is very clear but we all have our own idea of what it means. Both of the authors explained to us the importance of liberal arts and how it is key to having a well-balanced community.

Seneca the Younger

Seneca the younger was a member of the most celebrated literary family. He wrote "On Liberal and Vocational studies" to define to us what liberal studies are. He also wanted to distinguish the differences between liberal studies and vocational training. Seneca is also explaining to us the purpose of good studies and says that we need to become critical thinkers. He suggests that we should focus on everything and not just one particular thing in our studies. Education is very important and by gaining one, you will get more opportunities to succeed in life.
